Center for Islamic Civilization Uzbekistan Iznik Tile Columns

Center for Islamic Civilization Uzbekistan Iznik Tile Columns

The tiles on three cylindrical columns in the pre-Islamic civilizations hall of the Center for Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan, in Tashkent, were produced by İznik Mavi Çini in 2025. For this 13 m² production, rectangular tiles were made instead of classic square tiles to fit the curved surface of the columns. The compositions consist of geometric arrangements and stylized floral motifs.

The Center for Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan is a museum and cultural complex next to the Hazrati Imam complex in Tashkent, officially opened on 17 March 2026. The center’s museum consists of six halls devoted to different periods of Uzbekistan’s history; the columns whose tiles were produced by İznik Mavi Çini stand in the hall of pre-Islamic civilizations.
Each of the three columns at the Center for Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan has a different pattern arrangement: on the first column a single pattern repeats across the surface, the second combines two patterns, and the third carries a separate composition. These patterns produced by İznik Mavi Çini are not exact copies of classical Iznik designs.
“Instead of producing curved tiles for the columns, we made flat rectangular tiles and chamfered their edges.”
— İznik Mavi Çini, Senior Architectural Projects Production Facility Manager
